Introduction

SMART Train is a modern commuter rail system serving Marin and Sonoma counties in the San Francisco Bay Area. With a 45-mile route and stations across Sonoma County Airport, Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Cotati, Petaluma, Novato, San Rafael, and Larkspur, SMART provides a reliable, low-emissions alternative to highway travel. We developed the brand identity system streamlined machine-age typography, and visual cues referencing the golden era of rail travel—infused with a distinctly modern, sustainable sensibility and a shot of California sunshine in the color palette.

RESULTS SMART ranks #1 in the North Bay and holds the second-highest ridership recovery rate of any U.S. commuter rail system—the highest in the Bay Area. Surveys show 33% of riders are former car commuters.
